A Visit of David H Turpin (Principal of University of Alberta in Canada) et al to TusHoldings Accompanied by Xue Qikun (Vice President of Tsinghua University)Print

On October 10, 2016, a delegation led by Dr. David H Turpin, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of University of Alberta in Canada, visited TusHoldings, accompanied by Xue Qikun (vice president of Tsinghua University) and received by Zhang Jinsheng (vice president of TusHoldings and board chairman of Tus Incubator). Zhang Yousheng (vice director of International Technology Transfer Center, Research Finding and Intellectual Property Management Office, Tsinghua University), Wen Hui (board chairman & president of Tus Clean Energy Group), Zhao Qing (general manager of Tus Water) and Lin Jian (international cooperation director of TusHoldings and deputy general manager of Tus Incubator) participated in the discussion meeting with the delegation. The two parties made a deep exchange concerning the cooperation in commercialization of research findings of universities, science park construction, innovative incubation, etc.  

The delegation led by Dr. David H Turpin firstly visited TusPark to see the architectural design & layout as well as the innovation and entrepreneurship atmosphere of this park. Lin Jian introduced the original purpose and development history of TusPark. He said, “As the operator and manager of TusPark, TusHoldings has rich experience in science park construction. And TusPark, built 22 years ago, is still a first-class university science park in the world.”

During the visit to the maker space of TusStar, Zhang Jinsheng and Lin Jian gave a special introduction to the “seven-step incubation chains” built by TusStar relying on the platforms and resources of TusHoldings and Tsinghua Industry. Zhang Jinsheng said, “In advantage of Tsinghua University’s outstanding talents, the entrepreneurship incubation of TusStar began with the entrepreneurship related courses provided jointly with Tsinghua University, and promoted innovation and entrepreneurship of college students by means of entrepreneurship lab, entrepreneurship training camp and associated incubation fund. In respect to commercialization of research findings of universities, the Star Gathering Program and Foundation Stone Program launched by Tsinghua Industry respectively focus on upgrading of entrepreneurship incubation ecosystem and commercialization of research findings of key projects. TusStar is devoted to serving global entrepreneurs by virtue of its unique ‘incubation service + entrepreneurship training + angel investment + open platform’ mode.”

Dr. David H Turpin expressed recognition to the complete entrepreneurship service system built by TusHoldings and its remarkable achievements, and praised the great contribution made by TusStar in construction of the university technological achievements conversion platform. He said, “There is close academic exchange between Tsinghua University and University of Alberta. Many research findings need a conversion platform. So the incubation mode of TusStar provides a good example. We expect to work with TusHoldings and integrate the advantages of the two parties to promote the conversion of technological achievements.”

Dr. Ying Y Tsui from University of Alberta said, “University of Alberta has outstanding research teams. And in TusStar, we see many innovation & entrepreneurship incubation modes similar to or different from ours. These are quite enlightening for us. We are looking forward to the cooperation between TusHoldings and University of Alberta.”

It is learned that this visit of Dr. David H Turpin is materially significant for the cooperation between TusHoldings and University of Alberta. Before this, there has been cooperation in many disciplines between University of Alberta and Tsinghua University. Dr. David H Turpin et al were so interested in TusPark that they paid a special visit to it to see by themselves the achievements of TusHoldings in science park construction and innovation & entrepreneurship incubation. He said that this visit was very impressive for him and he looked forward to further cooperation between University of Alberta and TusHoldings to promote innovation & entrepreneurship and conversion of technological achievements. He also invited the leaders of TusHoldings to visit University of Alberta. 

Xue Qikun, vice president of Tsinghua University, expressed warm welcome to the delegation led by Dr. David H Turpin. According to him, University of Alberta is an excellent academic partner in touch with Tsinghua University. As a large-scale comprehensive enterprise based on Tsinghua University, TusHoldings had made remarkable achievements in science park construction, technological achievements conversion and innovation & entrepreneurship. If TusHoldings could build a technological achievements conversion platform together with University of Alberta, this would be a great progress in the cooperation between the two parties and would be significant for the development of global technological services. He wished the friendship between the two parties could last forever. 

Members of the delegation also include Dr. Huang Cen (executive director of International Relation and Recruitment Office, University of Alberta). And Xu Jing (officer of International Affair Office, Tsinghua University) participated in the reception.
