Recently, the “2019 Cambridge China Forum” co-sponsored by Cambridge China Centre and TusPark UK was held at the Wellcome Genome Campus of University of Cambridge. Themed by “Booster of China-UK Investment and Trade, Leader of Science and Technology”, the Forum had an in-depth discussion on the cooperation and complementarity between China and the UK in the fields of technological R&D, project investment and trade.

LI Jinchao, Director of the Cambridge China Centre, said at the opening ceremony of the Forum that the “2019 Cambridge China Forum” was supported by the Chinese and British governments and business organizations, including Chinese Embassy in the UK, UK Department for International Trade, Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, Cambridge Science Park and Cambridge Business Promotion Association. LI Jinchao has told the reporter of Science and Technology Daily that this is the second time for the Cambridge China Centre to hold such an event ever since its establishment. “The ‘Cambridge China Forum’ has become a first-class business platform connecting Cambridge technology clusters and China. It will actively promote the complementary advantages and investment & trade cooperation between China and the UK”.

According to John Bridge, Head of the Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, the Cambridge region is the UK’s fastest-growing region for technological innovation and is thus not subject to the impact of Brexit. The large Chinese market is a great appeal to the UK. But they should know what China needs and who are the competitors they face in China.

Charles Cotton, the initiator of “Cambridge Phenomenon”, explained the origin and development of “Cambridge Phenomenon” and described the characteristics of the contemporary “Cambridge Phenomenon”. He believes that there is a large space for the cooperation between the UK and China in the fields of biomedicine, information technology, etc. Matthew Bullock, Dean of St Edmund’s College, University of Cambridge, shared a series of close collaborations between Cambridge and China in various areas with the theme of Cambridge and the Silk Road.

According to LIN Zhuocun, President of TusPark UK, Chinese investors and market are more willing to cooperate with British companies than ever before, the Sino-British relationship has entered a “golden age”, and a variety of innovation cooperation methods have emerged, including the “Cambridge China Forum”.

The participants believe that there is a large development space for the cooperation between China and the UK in the fields of technology, trade and investment because of UK’s great technological R&D strength and China’s large market and yearly increasing foreign investment ability. During the two-day forum, more than 130 experts, scholars and industry leaders from the Chinese and British governments, academic institutions, enterprises and investment sectors gave suggestions on how to promote and increase the two-way cooperation between China and the UK in the fields of biotechnology, artificial intelligence, 5G, intellectual property protection, etc. Dozens of investment institutions and 16 British technological innovation companies even carried out in-depth discussions.
